Test Duration
The SAT test takes place within a 3-hour time frame, with an optional 50-minute essay section. It consists of a Reading Test with 52 questions, a Writing and Language Test with 44 questions, and a Math Test with 58 questions.
Test Timing
Considering the number of questions, it is important to manage your time effectively for the SAT. On the SAT, you will have around 1 minute and 10 seconds per question, given the total of 154 multiple-choice questions.
Scoring
SAT scores range from 400 to 1600 as a composite score. Additionally, subscores and cross-test scores help identify your strengths and weaknesses in specific sections. It’s important to note that there is no passing score, as colleges consider various factors in addition to your SAT score when evaluating applicants.
The SAT does not penalise test takers for guessing, as incorrect answers are not deducted. Therefore, it’s advisable to make an educated guess rather than leaving a question unanswered. The SAT allows you to submit four score reports along with your college applications.
Many universities also use a practice known as superscoring, where they combine your best Maths score with your best Reading and Writing score, even if they came from different test sittings. This means that if you take the SAT more than once, you don’t need to worry about your overall composite score on any single attempt, as many colleges will consider your strongest section results across all your sittings.
